กรดมาลิค เป็นสารประกอบที่ได้มาจากธรรมชาติ ( Organic Compound ) ซึ่งสารประกอบที่ทำให้เกิดความเปรี้ยว คือ Dicarboxylic Acid โดยมีส่วนประกอบที่เป็น Malate ซึ่งสามารถทำการสกัดออกมาได้เป็น Malic Acid ดังนั้น กรดมาลิค จึงเป็นกรดที่ได้มาจากวัตถุดิบตามธรรมชาติ

กรดมาลิค พบมากในแอปเปิ้ล จึงเรียกว่า กรดแอปเปิ้ล มีประโยชน์ในกระบวนการผลิตสาร อะดีโนซีนไทรฟอสเฟต (Adenosine triphosphate) หรือกระบวนการที่เซลล์ใช้พลังงานที่สะสมไว้ทันที จึงนิยมนำไปสกัดเป็นผลิตภัณฑ์อาหารเสริมต่างๆ เช่น อาหารเสริมช่วยย่อยอาหาร อาหารเสริมบำรุงการไหลเวียนโลหิต และอาหารเสริมบำรุงกำลังจากภาวะอ่อนล้าเรื้อรัง เป็นต้น
